The Amazing Spider-Man
Fanboy Fix, Summer Movies 2012
I say it's great. A Venom film would be amazing. Venom is my favorite Villain in the Spider-Man Universe. Do it, Venom will be Great!!!!!
Meh. I didn't want a Spidey reboot so soon, or feel like I needed one. I'm likely going to pass on this summer's installment, since I'm fully confident it is going to be a dud anyway. 7/10 is the best it can hope to achieve which is still not nearly enough for me to waste my time redundantly.
dont just pass judgement immediately. it may be very good!
Meh, judgement is passed, for reasons I stated. I'm far too skeptical of this one. The only way I'm going to see this in the theater is if it gets unanimous outstanding rave reviews, from critics and people I know and trust alike, and I'm talking blow my socks off material. I HAVE NO INTEREST IN WASTING MY TIME, OR MONEY, ON SOME REDUNDANT, UNNECESSARY, MEDIOCRE HO HUM REBOOT. If the reviews are average, I won't even waste my time on a redbox rental. PASS THANK YOU. NEXT!
Make NO MISTAKE, THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN AN ATTEMPT AT A CASH COW HOT OFF THE COAT TAILS OF SPIDERMAN 3's OBSCENE BOX OFFICE SHOWING. THEY RUINED TOBEY'S MOVIES WHICH WERE ACTUALLY AN EXCELLENT FIRST TWO ENTRIES. After Spidey 3, someone feels like all they need to do is make any movie with that character and they can print money. Regardless of the substance. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
While doing Secret Wars would be every fan boys dream, we don't need to go anywhere near there or even as far as NASA bringing something back from the moon to establish the Venom symbiote. Through Avengers, we've already shown that alien races exist and are plausible in the current Marvel movie universe. The "Venom" entity could be something as simple as some piece of tech left behind in the aftermath of the Avengers war. Being a photojournalist, Eddie Brock could simple stumble upon it while on assignment covering the war and trigger it through some character flaw (his jealousy or anger, etc)
The template for a Venom movie's characters could be King Kong. Venom would be the star but he would be surrounded with a supporting cast of regular humans, some goodhearted and some villainous. He could start out as sort of a rough-around-the-edges antihero but turn to the "dark side" throughout the movie with the help of the symbiote. There could be villains even badder than him that he goes after, but also people who love him that he disappoints (a la Padme in Revenge of the Sith), and goodhearted cops who try to catch him. To get the alien to earth without Secret Wars better than Spider-Man 3, you probably want to have NASA bring it down as residue from the Moon for experimentation and then have it attracted to Brock's temper.
Venom (at least Eddie Brock as Venom in the comics) very much considers himself to be a hero. and protector of the people. He is a lot like the punisher using leathal attacks in non-leathal situations and having some really twisted ideas about who is guilty and deserves death (namely spiderman).
We need a well done, non half-a$$ed Venom movie to make up for that crappy excuse for a Venom in the 3rd Spider-Man film a few years back. However, giving a villain his own movie could be tricky because without the hero trying to stop the villain at every opportune moment (which would technically make the movie about the hero) then we wouldn't really have much of a plot line going on. I guess we could see a movie on how the dude becomes villain but I have a hard time thinking it would take 2 hours to explain something that only needs a good 30 minutes to explain.
A Venom movie could be risky but if they pull it off correctly, it could be a significant achievement. Venom is considered to be Spidey's most dangerous enemy but no one has ever tried to build up Eddie Brock's story of how he had a negative relationship with Peter and Spider-Man. If they can make this happen, I'd see it.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
