NCM Fathom and Bandai Entertainment – the ones who brought us a special showing of Death Note last year – team up again to debut a one-night showing of Eureka Seven -- Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers on Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The nationwide event features the English-dubbed film and an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at its creation at the studio Bones.
The writer of Eureka Seven, Dai Sato, is known for having penned anime greats Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Samurai Champloo, to name a few. The Eureka series is comprised of 50 gripping episodes. Kudos to Sato for not dragging it out to a thousand-plus fillers. In Japan, it's known as Psalms of Planets Eureka Seven, and it deftly incorporates music.
As with most mecha anime, this one is a doozey to explain. The central theme focuses on the innocent love of Renton, a teenage boy, and Eureka, a young humanoid. It takes place about 10,000 years after mankind is forced to leave Earth because of a sentient life form that merges with it. They've settled on a rocky planet where the atmosphere contains transparent light particles or "trapar." "Lifting" is a sport where one can surf the trapar on a board – like surfing air waves. Renton's chance meeting with Eureka allows him to meet his lifting idol, Holland, who leads a renegade group called Gekkostate. It changes the course of Renton's life, and he vows to protect Eureka and confront his destiny. The film's set in the middle of the series.
