Diego Luna's highly anticipated Cesar Chavez biopic finally has a trailer. Michael Peña will star as Chavez, with America Ferrera as Chavez’ wife and Rosario Dawson as civil rights activist Dolores Huerta. The story will follow Chavez as he organizes the largest nonviolent protest in U.S. history in an effort to obtain basic human rights for over 50,000 farm workers in California. The film hits theaters April, 4, 2014.
Here's the official synopsis: Chávez chronicles the birth of a modern American movement led by famed civil rights leader and labor organizer Cesar Chávez. Torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to bringing dignity and justice to others, Chávez embraced nonviolence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle for the rights of farm workers. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual's ability to change the system.
Peña admitted to us earlier this year that taking on this role was a daunting task.
"I'm not going to lie… it was a lot of pressure," he said. "My dad was a farmer and so was my mom--you can call them campesinos--and they weren't really getting paid fairly and so that was one of the reasons why they moved to America. What I really wanted to do with that movie was make it entertaining. We didn’t want to bore anyone and be too preachy. That's what our intensions were."
So what are his thoughts on the trailer?
"I was really happy with what I saw. Diego was challenging… but he was definitely guiding me the entire way and I thought it was awesome. I got a lot of respect for that guy and I think he's a natural director."
