Jim Varney may have passed on several years ago, but the legacy of his most well-known on-screen character endures.
Variety reports that Ruckusfilm is launching a reboot of Varney's Ernest P. Worrell character in Son of Ernest.
Newcomer Dan Ewen has been chosen to write the screenplay and will also produce. Aside from the film centering on Ernest's long-lonst son, plot details are being kept under wraps. Early discussions are also underway to character the lead.
"Ernest was this plucky little engine that could – against all odds, " Ewen said. "Ernest struck a nerve, one we're going to revisit. WE plan to honor the originals and Jim Varney while birthing a new chapter that lies somewhere between not sucking and Earth-shatteringly funny."
No start date has been announced, although you really have to ask yourself, how excited can one get about an Ernest franchise reboot. Know what I mean?

LEAVE ERNEST ALONE! Ernest Goes to Camp was an amazing cinematic suppository (one of the few I really liked; pretty much first intro to Ernest, and the best of all of 'em).
Don't ruin Ernest by rebooting it. It's Varney's legacy, don't profane it by spoofing it, spinning it off, watering it down, rebooting it or just generally touching it. It wasn't THAT good a set of movies to begin with. Why do we need more mediocrity? It had its time and its place. We don't need it again. Just like we didn't need Christmas Story 2.
STOP. JUST STOP. These reboots of no-name movies are getting stupid and are just showing how desperate Hollywood is for new movie ideas. How about this: try something NEW and DIFFERENT...
Why can't Hollywood crap up crappy movies/t.v. shows?
I happened to love Ernest! That's all I watched when I was little.
why cant anyone come up with their own ideas anymore everything is reboot or prequel :(
oh god, why?
My point actually, why ... Ernest was the past no reason for a reboot. What a waste of money?
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
