Yesterday, Sony hosted a private press event showcasing some footage and the first trailer for the summer sci-fi action flick Elysium. Catch up on all the details, the big highlights and listen to Erik Davis' interview with Matt Damon from last year's Comic-Con.
Now fans get their first look at the movie which will arrive in theaters on August 9. Yahoo Movies premiered the trailer this afternoon.
Elysium stars Damon as a former criminal trapped on a wasteland that is Earth in the year 2154. The wealthy have all left the planet for a perfectly crafted society hovering over Earth called Elysium. In this utopic society, there is a cure for all sickness and the rich live comfortably. Damon is involved in a radioactive accident and is given five days to live. He taps into his criminal roots in order to survive and finds a way up to Elysium where he can be cured.
The film, which co-stars Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster and Diego Luna, hosted a panel at Comic-Con last year (see interviews below the new poster) and will most likely return this year to ramp up interest in the movie. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, take a look at the first trailer and poster below. District 9's Neill Blomkamp directs.
What do you think of the footage? Does Elysium look like it's poised to be a late summer hit?

Not bad...I like Matt Damon so I will be going to see this. :)
After watching the preview, it'll be great to see Matt Damon play against-type and the movie definitely looks to be a late summer hit.
Emotionally indepth-action and Matt Damon looks pretty heavy-intense in all that armor gear.
Wow. Well, with me not liking District 9 very much I was pretty skeptical of another apocalyptic movie by the same creators. But after the trailer, I'm pretty excited about it now. Just with the little footage there is, it looks to be an awesome sleeper for the summer. Plus seeing Matt Damon jump out of his normal role is going to be interesting and fun at the same time!
District 9 was very intriguing, but I wasn't expecting the violence depicted in District 9 to be on an extreme level. I walked out of the theater feeling sick.
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
