A rumor earlier this week stating that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in talks to play Batman in Warner Bros. upcoming superhero blockbuster Justice League, had many fans naturally going back to Christopher Nolan's most recent Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises.
Without giving too much away, the film concludes with JGL's John Blake being set as a successor to Bruce Wayne, so it made sense to assume that Gordon-Levitt would be involved in Justice League in some manner.
Nolan however says that was never really his intention, stating that he left the ending open for thematic reasons and not studio franchise purposes.
In an interview with Film Comment, Nolan says, "For me, The Dark Knight Rises is specifically and definitely the end of the Batman story as I wanted to tell it, and the open-ended nature of the film is simply a very important thematic idea that we wanted to get into the movie, which is that Batman is a symbol. He can be anybody, and that was very important to us."
Nolan continues, "Not every Batman fan will necessarily agree with that interpretation of the philosophy of the character, but for me, it all comes back to the scene between Bruce Wayne and Alfred in the private jet in Batman Begins, where the only way that I could find to make a credible characterization of a guy transforming himself into Batman is if it was a necessary symbol, and he saw himself as a catalyst for change and therefore it was a temporary process, maybe a five-year plan that would be enforced for symbolically encouraging that good of Gotham to take back their city. To me, for that mission to succeed, it has to end, so this is the ending for me, and as I say, the open-ended elements are all to do with the thematic idea that Batman was not important as a man, he's more than that. He's a symbol, and the symbol lives on."
With The Dark Knight Rises arriving on home video next Tuesday, fans will certainly be able to dissect the film much more thoroughly. Nolan won't have any say as to whether JGL is in Justice League. The director has, in fact, insisted on distancing himself from the movie, so if Warner Bros. decides to continue the John Blake storyline from TDKR, it will be from the view-point of another writer and director.
Do you still want Gordon-Levitt to return anyway or should WB leave Nolan's Gotham trilogy alone? What do you make of the open-ending – are there more than just "thematic elements" there?

i agree, jgl will be robin and pretty sure c.b. will be batman. what would be awesome is after doing a jl, do a movie where jl and avengers fight together,
How many reboots are we going to get??? Especially after Nolan's story/films that were impressive and flawless from beginnin to end. LEAVE IT ALONE! If anything needs to be rebooted it's Catwoman! Give Anne Hathaway her own movie.
I honestly think the studio has no other choice but to reboot the batman franchise. Although there have been many interpretations of the character there is still room for more. The reason I say this is because Nolan left revived the character and elevated the standard for the genre. I think Nolan's Batman series was amazing and his interpretation of the ending is perfect. And I think it stands perfectly alone as a great hero movie series. WB is planning on making a JL movie so there is really no choice for the studio but to reboot the series. I don't think WB will want to tamper with the image that Nolan had set in his Batman series so I don't think JGL will be seen in any batman interpretation(unless they are very desperate and un-creative
If they are willing to stick the heroes in Justice League. Joseph should be the character he was in for The Dark Knight Rises, which was Robin. Why not bring Christian Bale back to play Batman. It would make more sense. Also there have been enough Batman movies. There is no reason for a reboot of the series or to continue the story from Christopher Nolan's vision. I know Nolan did not create Batman but I wish DC Comics would move on to another comic. They have a lot of other comics they can make into movies. There have been to many Batman movies, it is time to move on to something else.
Yeah but are we forgetting something Selina
I agree with Nolan. But, I would have robin in the justice league because that would make more sense. Batman died wearing his bat suit thus there is no bat suit but he does have his robin suit soooo...
he had more than 1 suit and he didnt die
Despite TDKR was a fine conclusion to the franchise, I still want JGL part of the JL series
I thought Rises was fine the way it is. Its not as good as Begins or DK, but its a fine way to end the series
I agree compltely but i found Rises as good as Begins and better than DK
I think of it as DK being the best, Begins in second, and Rises nearly behind
Not be BB first DKR 2nd and DK behind
I personally loved TDKR. If any continuation was to occur, I would prefer Joseph Gordon-Levitt to adopt the Nightwing persona. That would allow for ties to the universe established by Nolan in his trilogy and at the same time open doors for a new hero in the DC film universe. As for the Justice League movie, I will reserve judgement until a story and cast are firmly in place.
I believe what Nolan did to Batman is unprecedented and his trilogy should be left alone.
I think they should leave Nolan's trilogy alone. I'll be mad if JGL is Batman. These movies were amazing and simply putting the same character and person in the Justice League movie would be a slap to the face to Nolan. While on that note the ideas of just going straight into a Justice League movie is ridicules. Sadly, the movie is most likely gonna suck because we have no character development what so ever. That's why the avengers was so great because we already had character development with 5 other movies instead of jumping right into the avengers. STUPID MOVE Warner Bros, Justice League will be a train wreck.
I will not be mad
I believe simply rebooting Batman would be an unwise move for DC. The way the ending to DKR works sets up John Blake as the successor to the cowl. It would do the Justice League movie justice to continue with JGL on board instead of trying to reboot Batman again. I think the Justice League film deserves to be good if made rather than just a money ploy and JGL would help sustain the film's integrity. I want it to succeed and believe that that is the only way it can truly match the Avengers critically and commercially.
I agree totally
Me too but i wont be too mad if they reboot it completely I saw the avengers without seeing the other five movies because it was a stand alone movie
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
