News and Notes
Jon M. Chu, best known for helming Step Up 2 and 3D, along with the Justin Bieber documentary Never Say Never, is in talks to helm a live-action version of the Masters of the Universe. Talks have just begun with Chu, who is currently in the middle of 3D conversion of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The film would revolve around He-Man, a wandering barbarian on the planet Eternia and his battles with the sinister Skeletor. The Mattel toy line was previously adapted into a feature film in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. That version flopped, though the property was successful as an animated property in the mid '80s. Talk of a Masters of the Universe film has been around since 2007, when Joel Silver was initially attached to produce. [Deadline]
While we're several months away from getting a first look at The Hangover: Part III, that hasn't stopped Warner Bros. from dropping this new teaser logo for the film. It's not much and let's certainly hope this doesn't become a trend. The Hangover – Part III arrives in theaters May 24, 2013 (the same day as Fast & Furious 6).
Speaking of Fast Six, production has gotten underway in Europe as the film speeds toward it's Memorial Day weekend showdown with The Wolfpack. The ever-expanding cast of character added one more in The Raid's Joe Taslim over the weekend. He'll play "a fearless killer named Jah who uses a variety of techniques including martial arts and parkour skills to battle his opponents." We're presuming he'll play one of Luke Evans' henchman. Evans was cast months ago as the lead villain in the film. [Variety]
Mark Wahlberg and Liam Neeson have received offers for the lead role in Vincenzo Natali's adaptation of William Gibson's sci-fi novel Neuromancer. Wahlberg is being sought for the anti-hero role of Case, a burnt-out hacker and cyber-thief while Neeson would play Armitage. [Movie Hole]
Academy Award nominated actor Demian Bichir has joined Bridesmaids director Paul Feig's upcoming comedy, The Heat. Bichir will play an FBI agent along with Sandra Bullock who forms an uneasy partnership with a Boston cop played by Melissa McCarthy. [Deadline]
Bill Murray is negotiating to headline Ted Melfi's St. Vincent de Van Nuys, a drama about "a twelve-year-old boy in need of a babysitter who moves in next door to a misanthropic ageing retirees who life mainly consists of gambling, hookers and drinking." The elder becomes an unlikely mentor to the boy. [Variety]
