Could Taylor Swift Play Supergirl?

Look up in the sky – it’s a bird, it’s a plane … it’s country music sensation Taylor Swift and she’s about to kick some serious butt! We don’t know that yet, since this is just another one of those crazy rumors, but according to Hollyscoop producers are real interested in having Taylor Swift play Supergirl in a big-screen movie. The site claims Swift is among a number of young stars being looked at for the role of Supergirl, which last arrived in theaters back in 1984 with a very lackluster (and unsuccessful) version that starred Helen Slater as the girl in the cape.

Also mentioned is the possibility of a spin-off TV show, so it seems like Warner Bros. is definitely interested in playing with the female version of Superman, though they’re not sure in what format yet. Obviously Taylor Swift would attract a very large audience of teen and tween viewers (especially if they find a way to put her real-life boyfriend Taylor Lautner in the film too), but would such a move also upset the fanboys who are still waiting for Superman to return to the big screen?

Personally, while I’d love to see more female superheroes in theaters, I’d rather Warner Bros. spend time figuring out a way to resurrect Superman on the big screen. There are other costumed female heroes that have more going for them than Supergirl, though I suppose it could work as a straight-up teen centric flick aimed at the Twilight generation. Swift, on the other hand, is skinnier than a twig, so she’ll have to bulk up in order to beat up the baddies.
