From Stacie Hougland: It's Day 3 of Comic-Con, and crazy with things to do and see. I parked myself in Hall H for the Terminator Salvation presentation, which included the trailer premiere. People, get ready to get pumped for this one, it looks like a fan-freaking-tastic way to reinvent the series.
The trailer opens on Christian Bale, who plays John Connor, who finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world of 2018, after Skynet has destroyed the world, as he finds out on first meeting Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin, stepping into Michael Biehn's shoes). "Come with me if you want to live," Yelchin says, as the two speed off onto a tank-like vehicle. Following are a lot of explosions, shots of the Resistance in their tanks, and glimpses of the T600. "This is not the future my mother told me about," John says at one point. It ends with John shouting, "You son of a bitch!" before a metal claw above him reaches out at his eyes.
Director McG joined the cast onstage for the presentation--they'd just been filming in New Mexico this week, and all had the freckles to prove it. "We wanted it to look as real as possible with little visual effects," McG said. "There have been lots of rumors about the rating, and I told Christian that the movie comes first. So if it's an R, it's an R."
Co-star Common got tremendous applause, as he chimed in: "We rollin'! This is gonna be fly, you guys are gonna LOVE it!"
"It's intense. It's not for pansies," added Sam Worthington.
McG stressed how much the cast and filmmakers wanted to stay true to the mythology of the original series. "It's set before the series began in 2029, so you see the state of the war at the time and the world of Skynet." Asked if Arnold Schwarzenegger would make a reappearance, he (gasp, revealed?), "Like I said, we wanted to stay true to the mythology of the original movies. And the T800 is part of that mythology."
More to come soon on Death Race, Drag Me to Hell and Pixar's Up, plus my exclusive interview with Pineapple Express's Seth Rogen! See more new pics, too, in our Comic-Con photo gallery!
