Box Office: Who Will Win the Weekend? (10/2-10/4)

Okay, so I was wrong two weeks in a row. Whatever – you all were wrong too! 41% of you chose Surrogates to win last weekend, and whaddya know it was that darn Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in the top spot yet again. Kudos to the animated foodie flick, but this weekend I can't see it surviving the onslaught of new movies. Let's check out the competition…
 

What's the Scoop: Juno's Ellen Page stars in this coming-of-age movie about a jaded misfit who finds solace in joining an all-female roller derby team.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: This fun, fast and frisky little film features the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore and whips its way into theaters with a total girl power vibe that might just signal box office victory. 
 
What's the Scoop: Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Jesse Eisenberg star as a ragtag group of zombie killers who plow their way through the undead on a journey to an amusement park where they hope to find safety.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Buzz on this one is through the roof, and its 81-minute runtime is even sweeter. Audiences haven't had this much fun watching the comical destruction of zombies since Shaun of the Dead, and now that we're in October I could see folks lining up for some much-needed laughs and scares.
 
What's the Scoop: Controversial documentarian Michael Moore returns to the big screen with this film that examines the impact major corporations have on our lives and throughout the world, while concentrating on the price America pays for its love of capitalism.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: With hundreds of thousands of people out of work and badly hurt during the recession, a lot of them may seek out Moore's film to help answer questions and potentially help solve problems in their own lives.
 
What's the Scoop: Comedian Ricky Gervais returns to the big screen in a film he directed about a world in which lying never existed until one bloke (Gervais) suddenly (and accidentally) invented it.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: The marketing push on this one has been heavy, and Gervais never fails to entertain, but I'm worried the British comedian may find himself outnumbered by some more familiar talent in competing films.
 
What's the Scoop: In advance of Toy Story 3 arriving in theaters in 2010 comes this re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D for the first time ever.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: According to our super computers here at Fandango, this puppy was tracking very well and leading all new releases with 12% of advance ticket sales, followed not so closely behind by Zombieland with 3%. But will kids sit through back-to-back movies in 3D?
 
My Prediction: Though I'm leery of choosing it, I'm hopeful that audiences will find their way to Zombieland this weekend (it is the most entertaining film, after all), and help propel it to a top spot. So, yeah, I'm going with Zombieland for the win!

    I'm going to go with Capitalism: A Love Story, as Michael Moore is usually reliable for drawing in people who normally stay at home (and he's been out there promoting heavily on the talk show circuit for the past week or so). However, I wouldn't be upset to see either Zombieland or Whip It in the #1 slot, as both of these also look like winning films. IMO, this is definitely the most interesting weekend I've seen for new movies in months!

    My bet is Whip It....mass appeal due to the actors/characters and the story line. I've seen all of these except Capitalism. Zombieland is going to rake in some major bucks for years to come. Excellent movie. My husband went two nights in a row to see Whip It! Both of these are fantastic!

    Zombieland will probably win it- Toy Story isn't playing on enough screens, and the screens it does have are limited to 3 or 4 shows daily due to the length of the double feature.

    Looks like Zombieland already won it. I caught it Friday night and I loved it! It was very entertaining and the most fun I've had at the movies for awhile.
