Bond Back on Top as 'Skyfall' Takes the Box Office Win

By: Sean OConnell on December 9, 2012 at 3:03PM Comments (41)
Contrary to popular belief, the sky isn’t falling, and Skyfall continues to rise on the box office Top 10 charts.

Despite already being in theaters for five weeks, Sam Mendes’ James Bond adventure topped a relatively weak weekend, posting $11 million and grabbing the No. 1 slot on the charts. Skyfall became the highest-grossing 007 movie weeks ago, so at this point, the critically acclaimed sequel is simply padding its financial lead … and entertaining fans of all ages.

The top half of the chart is loaded with features that have been screening for weeks. The animated Rise of the Guardians climbed up to second place with an impressive $10.5M, while the final Twilight sequel earned $9.2M to push its cume to $268.7M overall.

This weekend’s newcomer, Playing for Keeps, limped into theaters with a $6M opening. The romantic comedy with Gerard Butler as a washed up soccer star, co-stars Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman and Dennis Quaid. But that star-power didn’t translate into firepower at the multiplexes, and Keeps kept ticket-buyers heading to different screens.

Not to Brad Pitt’s Killing Them Softly, however. After a soft opening last weekend, the crime thriller continued to tumble. It earned $2.7M in its second weekend, good for a tenth-place finish.

Here’s the full Top 10 list for the weekend:

1. Skyfall, $11M, $261.6M

2. Rise of the Guardians, $10.5M, $61.9M

4. Lincoln, $9.1M, $97.3M
