Warner Bros.' Akira remake sent out a casting call yesterday seeking extras and stand-ins. In the process, a short description was attached revealing story changes from the original animated movie and manga series.
The description is as follows:
"Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel. Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers."
"Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy, Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo's mind.. Kaneda slashes with The Colonel's troops on his wat to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races in to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island, as he did thirty years ago."
Offers have been send out to Garret Hedlund for Kaneda, Kristen Stewart for Ky, Helena Bonham-Carter for Lady Miyako and Ken Watanabe for The Colonel, but none of the actors have confirmed whether they have agreed to play the roles.
What do you think of the new storyline?
Fanboy Fix, Eye on Anime
As an avid fan of anime in general and Akira specifically, all they need to do now is make it in 3d to totally tell the world "WE know what you want, we know what you LIKE!" They're screwing the pooch for sure!
I'm betting this will stay in pre-production purgatory.
wow way to destroy a classic that is just a horrible horrible concept for this movie
So they changed locations from Tokyo to Manhattan?, I woln't be surprised if they white wash this one as badly as they did with Last Airbender... this isn't an Uwe Bole movie is it? XD
well they messed this movie up nicely
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
