Attention Twihards, who have an insatiable thirst for every bit of New Moon content before its release. We've put together a guide for new characters, namely those of the Volturi and Wolf Pack. Whether you're brushing up on Twilight trivia before seeing the movie, or you're a newbie on the Stephenie Meyer bandwagon, you'll find everything you need to know about the up and coming vampires and werewolves in the pages ahead.
By Lizerne Guiting and John Halecky
In the Twilight Universe, vampires can't just run amuck, wreaking havoc in broad daylight. Well, they could, but it wouldn't be long before they'd be punished by the Volturi, the powerful coven of ancient vampires who lay down the law, and ensure that vampirism remains shrouded in secrecy. They're based in underground Volterra, Italy, and they're not friendly "vegetarians" like the Cullens.
Aro (Michael Sheen)
As the spokesperson and de facto leader of the Volturi, Aro is cunning and dangerous, but Sheen says he's also "a bit like a concerned grandfather at times with Edward." His voice is light and feathery, sort of like a sigh. "I've tried to go down that route, make him quite mesmerizing, that his voice is quite gentle and soft and yet there's something kind of unhinged about him."
Special ability: By touching a person, he can read every thought the person has ever had.
Caius (Jamie Campbell Bower)
In the book, he's described with having shoulder-length white hair as pale as his skin, which is nearly translucent like an onion. He seems to be the most openly aggressive of the Volturi leaders, itching to kill.
He may be Caius' spitting image, but in reality, jovial Jamie's the stark opposite, cracking jokes during interviews, flashing wide grins at the photogs and keeping an androgynous appearance.
Jane (Dakota Fanning)
Meyer revealed awhile back that the term Volturi refers specifically to its leaders Aro, Caius and Marcus, although there are many powerful members of its coven. Highly feared and respected is Jane, who is sadistic and lethal, although seemingly angelic.
Special ability: She can inflict the illusion of pain—and takes great pleasure in seeing others writhe in agony. Fanning says she loved playing someone evil for a change.
Demetri (Charlie Bewley)
He's the best known tracker, and also a Volturi guard.
Special ability: Unlike James (the tracker from Twilight), he can track people by the tenor of their thoughts rather than their scent. He doesn't need to be relatively close to his victim, which allows him to track people from all over the world.
Marcus (Christopher Heyerdahl)
As one of the three ancient leaders of the Volturi, Marcus is a bit of a zombie, since not much has excited him in the last century or so. Meyer says he lost his mate in battle long ago.
Special ability: He can see relationship ties—not just of the romantic type, but how strong one's devotion is to another. It's an amazing power; he can figure out who would die for another, where one's true loyalties lie, and who are key leaders in battle. Upon seeing the strength of Edward's and Bella's love, he's stirred from his zombie state.
Felix (Daniel Cudmore)
Other than being a (hunky) member of the Volturi guard, the books don't specify another known power. He does showcase fierce fighting skills, however. Check out Felix's smack down with Edward for yourself!
Alec (Cameron Bright)
He's the brother of Jane (Dakota Fanning) and the duo is notoriously called the "witch twins." We probably won't get to see Alec in action as his power isn't revealed until Breaking Dawn, but skip to the next photo if you'd rather not know his special ability.
Special ability: Alec doesn't use his power as frequently as Jane in the books, but it is still more potent. He can desensitize people, as in cut off their sense of sight, smell, feeling and hearing--perfect for confusing the enemy before attack.
Heidi (Noot Seear)
Heidi plays a small, but stunning part as a "fisher" and "bait." She "fishes" for humans for the Volturi to devour, and lures them into their lair using herself as bait. Described as gorgeous, long-legged, with lustrous hair and a silky voice, Noot's model experience must've come in handy. We added a little red to her eyes for effect.
The Wolf Pack
Vampires derogatively refer to the Quileute shape shifters as dogs, but fans adoringly call them shirtless hotties. That's because with their body temps running at about 108 degrees, they're hotter in more ways than one. And when they phase or transform into horse-sized wolves, their bodies expand so abruptly, their clothes are ripped to shreds. So you see, going sans shirt is justifiable...
Sam Uley (Chaske Spencer)
As the first to come of age and transform into a wolf since the Cullens moved back into Forks, he became the Alpha of the pack. Other pack members must follow his orders. In the Quileute tribe, the initial wolf transformation starts at puberty, triggered by the presence of a vampire. The number of vampires in the area affects the increase or decrease of tribe members becoming wolves to protect their people. The transformation makes a boy's body mature quickly to manhood—bulging biceps and all—and doesn't allow him to continue aging until he decides to stop phasing. The book revealed that Sam actually turned down a college scholarship because of becoming a wolf.
Paul (Alex Meraz)
He's a 16-year-old with a hot temper, and the one who Bella slaps, provoking his phasing into a dark, silver wolf. (You can watch Paul get pounded here.) Jacob phases too, and in the book, the two wolves brawl in the woods, but neither gets seriously hurt. That's because along with super strength, speed and lightning reflexes, they also possess super fast healing powers.
Embry Call (Kiowa Gordon)
Embry is the same age as Jacob and also one of his closest friends. Meyer made her wolves enormous with thunderous growls. After all, they're the natural enemy of the vampires, and measure up in battle.
Jared (Bronson Pelletier)
He was one of the first to transform into a wolf and later becomes the second to imprint, sort of like a love at first sight bond that's ignited the second they set eyes on their soul mate. Later in the book series, the characters speculate that imprinting is a way to pass on the wolf gene. Another thing exclusive to the wolf pack is what Edward calls a "pack mind." They can read each others' thoughts, so there's no privacy or secrets. He thinks it's "mesmerizing. All thinking together and then separately at the same time. There's so much to read."
Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner)
Although Sam, Paul, Embry and Quil are featured as the wolf pack, there are others, including Jacob, who are members. (Later, we get introduced to female members, too.) Jacob's position in the pack is Beta, second only to Sam. As a descendant of Ephraim Black (his great-great grandfather who led the pack and made a treaty with the Cullens), Jacob does, however, have a birthright to Alpha wolf, which complicates things further down the road.
