Zoe Saldana Talks 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' How She Almost Passed on 'Star Trek' and Going to the Theater with Her Mom

With Stark Trek Into Darkness almost in theaters nationwide, actress Zoe Saldana has been making the press rounds and naturally, people have been asking her about her recently confirmed role as assassin Gamora in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

MTV asked her what kind of film we could expect when it hits theaters on August 1, 2014. Saldana said, "It's feels unique, but it doesn't feel like it hasn't been done before. I love the levity in the script and I like the casting of it. I've been a fan of Chris Pratt and I think that his gifted, natural comedic timing might come in handy to play someone like Star-Lord."

She then talked a little bit about her costume. "I'm in the process right now of the evolution of conceiving Gamora's look. It's exciting! We're trying to work out comfort also, because you know that I definitely want to be involved in the stunt-doing of my character."

Star Trek Into Darkness which hits opened internationally yesterday and arrives in theaters nationwide May 15 in IMAX and IMAX 3D and May 16 everywhere else. Saldana portrays communications officer and Spock's love interest Nyota Uhura but when J.J. Abrams was first assembling his cast for the 2009 film, Saldana almost passed on the role.

Speaking with Latina magazine, Saldana said, "I think I was just a little beside myself because after the treat and the gift of booking Avatar and being in the middle of shooting, to be able to then do another great movie with another great filmmaker back to back – I was a little overwhelmed and I thought, 'Maybe I should just take some time off and focus and just rest?'"

We can thank Zoe's team for convincing her to take the role and not leaving us with a Saldana-less Star Trek reboot.

"My team was like, 'Zoe, are you stupid? Don't let fear immobilize you. This is an amazing opportunity to step into the shoes of an iconic series and it's in space and you're a sci-fi buff.' And I was like, 'Oh my God, who am I kidding?'"

Saldana also guest starred on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and talked about going to the theater with her mom, working with Zachary Quinto and speaking Klingon in Into Darkness. You can watch the full interviews below, which include a new clip in the third video.
