It was supposed to be Robert Pattinson’s triumphant return to theaters, starring opposite a pair of  Academy Award winners in Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz. Instead, Water for Elephants was topped by the animated sleeper hit Rio and Tyler Perry's latest Madea movie to open in third place. With The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn signaling the end of the franchise that helped turn Pattinson into a mega-star, it’s time to start concentrating on what the guy does from here on out. Sure, there are still two more Twilight movies set to hit theaters (in November 2011 and 2012), but we should get used to seeing R-Patz trying out some new things (I know it’s hard, but you can do it!).

While Taylor Lautner is obviously using his Twilight fame to launch a career as the next big Jason Bourne-eseque action star, Pattinson is choosing to star in these lower profile dramas in between Twilight sequels. Is it a wise decision? Will he lose his faithful mega-fanbase? Does he want to lose his faithful mega-fanbase? We’re not sure what the future holds for Robert Pattinson and his acting career, but we know that it starts with films like Water for Elephants, which is based on the bestselling book by Sara Gruen.
Sound off below in our poll and let us know what you thought of the film. Is this Robert Pattinson’s finest work as an actor? Is he believable in an on-screen romance when not opposite Kristen Stewart? Are these the types of films you’d like to see him in from here on out, or would you rather R-Patz go the Lautner route and take on more popcorn fluff?
