Welcome to the start of one of the biggest (and busiest) weeks of the year for holiday shoppers and moviegoers. Christmas week is always huge in that Hollywood likes to unveil some of their biggest movies of the year right in the thick of the holiday madness -- with several films arriving in theaters over the next couple of days, all battling each other for your hard-earned dollars. But before we begin to break down your holiday movie-watching possibilities, we must first evaluate the movies that just opened up in theaters this past weekend.
We had Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which won the top spot at the box office with $40 million, though that was down about $20 million from the original. Meanwhile, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked crashed its ship into second place with $23.5 million, a number that was also less than its predecessor. Are less people going to the movies this holiday season? Are more people using the time to shop their little hearts out?
As far as critical opinion goes, Sherlock Holmes 2 didn't do that bad at 60% Fresh over at Rotten Tomatoes, though Alvin and the Chipmunks sank to a paltry 13% Rotten, leading us to believe that critics just don't like those singing and dancing chipmunks much. But maybe you do! Now is the time for you to sound off and let us know what you thought of the new releases in theaters.
