While both of our new releases failed to take over the top spot at the box office (as predicted by 31% of you, and yours truly), that doesn't mean we shouldn't talk ALL about them today. To catch you up: Madagascar 3 once again reigned supreme at the weekend box office, taking in $35.5 million. Prometheus followed with $20.2 million, proving folks are still hungry for the Alien prequel, and we didn't get to a new release until the third spot, with Rock of Ages karaoking its way to $15.1 million. Meanwhile, the R-rating looks to have hurt the reliable Adam Sandler, as That's My Boy just barely coughed up a foul-mouthed $13 million.
It's a surprise to see That's My Boy in fifth place (behind Snow White and the Huntsman's $13.8 million), partly because Sandler does so well at the box office, and also because it seems a lot of people thought the film was really funny. You don't get that sense over at Rotten Tomatoes, where That's My Boy is sitting at a paltry 23% Rotten (with Rock of Ages at 41% Rotten), but buzz on Twitter and Facebook (at least in my movie-obsessed circles) seems more positive.
Sound off below with your thoughts on each film. Did That's My Boy get a bad rap, or is it just plain bad? And what about Rock of Ages -- did all those celebrities do the Broadway show justice?
