You Rate The New Releases: 'Bridesmaids' and 'Priest'

Another weekend in the books, and Thor’s hammer maintained enough tenacity to top the box office yet again with a healthy $34 million, bringing its domestic gross to $119 million. But the big story this weekend didn’t revolve around Thor – instead, it was all about the ladies. Or, well, Bridesmaids to be more precise. The R-rated female comedy is something of an underdog in today’s marketplace, especially one that’s written by women and stars women, but isn’t your typical schmaltzy romantic comedy. Bridesmaids – and its $26 million second-place opening – proved not only that smart female comedy still exists (and makes money), but also that it can be enjoyed by both sexes. Here’s hoping Hollywood takes more fun risks on female-driven stuff in the future because Bridesmaids was a refreshing surprise.

Meanwhile, the weekend’s other major release, Priest, opened in fourth place with $14.5 million, behind Fast Five, which is still chugging along at $19. 5 million for a grand domestic total of $169 million. This genre-bending flick was based on a graphic novel , but it may have had a bit too much going on to satisfy critics and moviegoers, drumming up a paltry 18% Rotten over at Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile Bridesmaids is still flying high with an 89% Fresh rating, and I can’t be the only one who kinda likes seeing the female comedy beat the special effects monster, especially during the summer blockbuster season. You go girls!
Now it’s your turn to sound off. Vote below and let us know what you thought of both Bridesmaids and Priest.
