You Pick the Box Office Winner: Will 'The Possession' Tackle 'The Expendables 2'?

As depressing as it may be for some (I’m looking at you, kids), we’ve finally reached the inevitable end of another very busy summer at the movies. The good news is that the other side of Labor Day weekend will usher in a fall season packed with tons of promising films, but even so we’ll need a few more days to say goodbye to a season that brought us movies like The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Dark Knight Rises … and The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure. Um, Oogie what now? Here, let’s take a closer look at how Hollywood has chosen to end its 2012 summer season …

The Possession

What’s the Scoop: Not to be confused with last week’s The Apparition, The Possession follows a young girl who buys an antique box at a yard sale only to learn its contents include a truly nasty spirit out to wreak all sorts of creepy havoc

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Those looking for a good scare at the movies before the next frightening school year begins will no doubt be turning to The Possession, this weekend’s most notable wide release.

Lawless (in theaters Wednesday)

What’s the Scoop: This John Hillcoat-directed drama takes us all the way back to Depression-era Virginia for a story about a gang of bootleggers who are threatened by a new deputy hell-bent on shutting them down for good.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Not only does this one pack a ton of star power (Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain), but it also features the meaty performances adults might be looking for in a weekend packed with films geared toward the younger generation.

The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (in theaters Wednesday)

What’s the Scoop: Those lovable Oogieloves (Goobie, Zoozie, and Toofie) hit the big screen for an adventure that finds them searching for five magical balloons to bring to Schluufy’s surprise birthday party.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: This film exists because it has a large enough fanbase to warrant it. Thus, that fanbase may give the box office a run for its money.

My Prediction: I’m afraid I might be flipping a coin for this one. Both Lawless and Oogieloves got a head start by opening on Wednesday, and I could see the former surprising us with a box office win, especially with its star power leading the way. However, teenagers and the like will want to take in one last movie before school begins, and they’re best option is The Possession, which makes it my pick to win the weekend.

My Pick of the Week: If you’re looking for something a little raunchy and hilarious, then out in limited release is the Sundance hit For a Good Time, Call …, which stars Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller as two rivals forced to move in together and start a phone sex operation. It’s dirty, sure, but it also comes with a lot of heart and an absolutely brilliant performance from Justin Long. Go see this!

Now it’s your turn – sound off and let us know which film you think will win the weekend box office.
