You Pick the Box Office Winner: Will 'Identity Thief' Steal the Weekend?

With a blizzard prepped and ready to knock around the east coast, those of you in the Northeast might as well cuddle up in a darkened theater and take in some of what Hollywood's offering up this weekend (since by all accounts so far, most theaters will remain open, though a few AMC and Regal locations may be closed). Can a comedy starring one of the funniest up-and-coming actresses shove Warm Bodies out of first place? Let's take a closer look ...

Identity Thief

What's the Scoop: Jason Bateman stars as a mild-mannered businessman who travels to Florida to confront the nutty woman (Melissa McCarthy) who stole his identity.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Ever since she stole every single scene in Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy has been quickly climbing the ranks of big-screen funny women, and pairing her with the hilariously straight Jason Bateman should prove a recipe for success at the box office.

Side Effects

What's the Scoop: Billed as Steven Soderbergh's final theatrical movie before he retires and moves on to other things, Side Effects stars Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum as a couple whose world begins to fall apart after she's prescribed an anti-anxiety drug that has some unexpected side effects.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: The cast is full of familiar folks who've worked with Soderbergh in the past (Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones), and fans of the director will definitely want to watch his last movie on the big screen seeing as we may never have a chance to see a new Soderbergh film in theaters ever again.

My Prediction: Melissa McCarthy is hotter than hot right now, so expect her wacky antics in Identity Thief to equal a nice chunk of change at the box office.

My Pick of the Week: There's no way I get away with not recommending Side Effects. Not only is it Soderbergh's final big-screen movie, but it's also a damn good thriller. Go check it out.

Alright folks, now it's your turn -- tell us what you're seeing this weekend, as well as which movie you think will win the weekend.
