What would you do if one night every year all movies were free? What in the world would you see? Swap movies for crime, and we have the premise for one of this weekend's two new releases! (Something tells me a movie about seeing movies for free wouldn't be all too compelling unless, well, we got to see it for free.) But anyway, can either of them slow down Fast & Furious 6? Let's take a closer look...
What's the Scoop: In the near future, crime is almost obsolete because of one day a year where all crime is legal. Yes, all crime, including murder. That's the intriguing premise for The Purge, which focuses on one family that take in a stranger who's being hunted by a bunch of people with murder on the mind.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: The concept really pulls you in, plus moviegoers will be itching for a little psychological horror following a month full of action blockbusters.
What's the Scoop: Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson reteam as a couple of guys who lose their jobs and wind up interning for Google. Hilarity (and plenty of Google product placement) ensues.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Wedding Crashers is one of the most memorable comedies of the past 10 years, and a lot of that is due to the chemistry these two guys have on-screen. Expect fans of that movie -- and these two guys in particular -- to show up in droves.
My Prediction: With Man of Steel set to dominate next weekend, let's gamble on this weekend. I'm gonna go with The Purge because school is ending and I think people wanna get their summer freak on right about now.
My Pick of the Week: The Kings of Summer is expanding to several markets this weekend. It's one of my favorite films of the year and one of the best coming-of-age flicks we've seen in a while. If it's playing by you, go see it. Trust.
Alright folks, have at it. What are you watching this weekend, and which movie do you think will win the weekend?
