It's on! Arguably the biggest weekend of the summer at the box office, Memorial Day weekend has played host to so many big movies over the years. From Star Wars to Indiana Jones to Pirates of the Caribbean, this is a weekend where some of the year's biggest and most talked-about movies arrive for a crowd excited about the summer ahead. This Memorial Day weekend is no different, with two of today's most successful franchises going head to head
What's the Scoop: Aging like a fine wine that drives really fast, this sixth installment of Hollywood's most electric franchise finds Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson muscling up in their muscle cars to do battle against a criminal mastermind.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Fast Five added Dwayne Johnson to the franchise, and with him came $86 million opening weekend. Eventually that number climbed to $626 million worldwide and we had a major franchise on our hands. With the entire crew coming back for more on a hot weekend like this, expect those numbers to potentially climb even higher at record speeds.
What's the Scoop: What started in Vegas will end in Vegas as we bid farewell to Phil, Stu and Alan while they embark on yet another tumultuous adventure full of guns, drugs, money and that poor giraffe.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: An $85 million opening weekend for The Hangover Part II proved this raunchy, foul-mouthed trilogy was out to wreck the joint .. or, well, the box office anyway. Expect its many fans to want to see how it all ends.
What's the Scoop: From the Ice Age and Rio folks comes this animated adventure about a teenager who's transported to a magic forest that's under attack from evil forces, and it'll soon be up to her to save their world -- and ours, too.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: The first major animated movie of the summer arrives at a time when we're spending lots of holiday time with our families, making Epic a great alternative to the other, more explosive movies in theaters.
My Prediction: While The Hangover Part III will put up a good fight, I expect Fast & Furious 6 to cruise into the top spot at the box office without breaking the speed limit.
My Pick of the Week: It's a long holiday weekend, and I'm in a fast and furious kind of mood. Ride or die, right?
