You Pick the Box Office Winner: Can 'Looper' Defeat the Monsters of 'Hotel Transylvania'?

Welcome back to another week of predicting those all-important box office numbers. This weekend finds the best sci-fi movie of the year take on an animated monster tale and a drama about two mothers who attempt to transform an inner city school. Let's take a closer look ...

What's the Scoop: In this loopy time-travel tale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, an assassin for the mob of the future who send their victims back in time so that Joe can dispose of their bodies and make it like they never existed. Problems arise when one of Joe's victims turns out to be his future self (Bruce Willis).

Why It Might Win the Weekend: The positive buzz on this one is out of control, and it's currently riding a 92$ Fresh rating over on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the highest rating among all recent releases (save for Finding Nemo, which technically came out years ago).

Hotel Transylvania

What's the Scoop: In this animated monster movie, Dracula (Adam Sandler) operates a high-end resort for monsters outside of the human world. Hilarity -- as well as a boy who discovers the resort and falls for Dracula's daughter -- ensues.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: The most family-friendly option in theaters is usually the one with the best chances of coming out on top. Add to that a voice cast that includes Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selina Gomez, Kevin James and more, and this could do very well with kids and adults.

Won't Back Down

What's the Scoop: Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis play two determined mothers who refuse to let their children's inner city school fail, setting out on a mission to fight the bureaucracy and offer their kids a brighter future.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: For those adults who don't want the action and violence featured in Looper, this looks to be a lighter option that may find a home with the many parents who can relate to the themes found inside the film.

My Prediction: While Looper is the best new movie in theaters this weekend, its violence and R-rating may prevent it from coming out on top. Expect Hotel Transylvania to win the weekend.

My Pick of the Week: In case you didn't notice me singing its praises throughout this week's column, my pick of the week is, of course, Looper. I loved this movie, and if you're any kind of sci-fi (or action) nerd, you'll love it too.

Now it's your turn to sound off and let us know which film you think will win the weekend box office. Also, tell us which movie you plan on seeing in the comments.
