You Pick the Box Office Winner: Can 'Battleship' Sink 'The Avengers'?

In case you haven’t noticed (and it’s pretty hard not to notice), The Avengers has been destroying box office records with each passing day. Not only did it just become the fastest film to $400 million (domestic) in only 14 days, but it’s also now Disney’s highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Toy Story 3. It’s now the ninth highest-grossing film of all time, period, and it still has some climbing left to do. But does that mean it has enough chops to beat this summer’s next big blockbusters? Let’s take a look at what’s arriving in wide release this weekend …

What’s the Scoop: Based on the popular Hasbro boardgame, Peter Berg directs this action spectacle about aliens who attack earth and find themselves up against a fleet of ships with folks like Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson and Rihanna on board.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: The special effects-heavy Transformers-esque Battleship has already collected a ton of money worldwide after opening a month ago in some foreign markets. Plus, if The Avengers has proven anything so far it’s that fans are real hungry for some of that explosive summer entertainment.

The Dictator

What’s the Scoop: Sacha Baron Cohen returns to screens as another over-the-top character, except this time he’s playing an angry, blood-thirsty dictator who risks his life and travels to America to make sure democracy never comes to his home country.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Sacha Baron Cohen has been everywhere promoting this movie, usually dressed in character, and so there’s more than enough awareness out there. Now it’s just up to audiences to determine whether his shtick is still worth the price of a movie ticket.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

What’s the Scoop: Based on the popular self-help book, this film tracks the lives of several couples as they navigate the fascinating, unflattering world of pregnancy.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s a mega popular book that’s read by ever expectant mother, plus stars like Cameron Diaz, Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez, Chace Crawford, Dennis Quaid and Brooklyn Decker should help persuade folks (especially females) to the movie theater.

My Prediction: Though Battleship looks strong and has done well overseas, I still think The Avengers is poised to win the box office for a third weekend in a row. If it’s going to be stopped, it’ll probably be Will Smith and those Men in Black who take it down.

My Pick of the Week: If you’re looking for some freaktacular, mind-bending sci-fi, seek out Beyond the Black Rainbow. It’s a bit trippy and not for everyone, but you hardcore sci-fi fans looking for something a little less “summer-ish” will have fun with this one.

Now it’s your turn – let us know which film you think will win this weekend’s box office.
