If you've been passing on the multiplex these last few weekends because you've been busy apple picking or pumpkin picking or something else involving the picking of things, then you might want to make this the weekend you return to theaters because it's a doozy. We have four movies arriving in theaters -- all of them different, with each one bringing you a unique entertainment experience. Need some help choosing? Let's break it down for ya ...
What's the Scoop: Based on an incredible true story, Ben Affleck directs (and stars in) this thriller set during the Iranian revolution about a CIA rescue mission where agents posed as Hollywood filmmakers scouting for a sci-fi movie in order to sneak American hostages out of the region.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It's getting fantastic reviews, with many already calling it one of the year's best films. With Oscar nods knocking on its door, folks will definitely want to see what all the buzz is about.
What's the Scoop: Ethan Hawke stars as a true-crime novelist who moves his family into the house where a grisly murder occurred in order to research the crime for his next book. As he begins to uncover the mystery behind the killings, he founds himself becoming the next chapter in a twisted story.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Those who want to get their October scare on should flock to this one, which I've already called the scariest movie of the year.
What's the Scoop: Kevin James stars as a biology teacher who, in order to help raise money for his cash-strapped school, decides to become a mixed-martial arts fighter. Hilarity (and a few black eyes) ensues.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Kevin James is a reliable and relatable actor who might not churn out the most original or thought-provoking movies, but he knows how to entertain. Expect this one to put up a good fight for first place at the box office this weekend.
What's the Scoop: A struggling screenwriter finds himself in a whole mess of trouble when his idiot friends kidnap a gangster's precious dog.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It has this weekend's most enticing ensemble cast, with Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Colin Farrell, among others. How do you not want to see that movie -- regardless of what it's about?
My Prediction: This is another tough one -- do audiences want to laugh or be scared? While Argo is the movie critics like the most, I sense that won't be the one that wins the weekend. For me, it's a toss up between Sinister and Here Comes the Boom -- and since Boom is more accessible with a lower rating, I'll go with that one. Boom!
My Pick of the Week: I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Sinister is the scariest movie of the year. It's October, Halloween is approaching, and it's hard for me not to recommend Sinister considering the month we're in. Go get scared. Better yet, go bring a friend or loved one and get scared together!
Alright kids, now it's your turn. Let us know what you're seeing this weekend, and which movie you think will win the box office.
