You Pick the Box Office Winner (9/23-9/25)

While our Fantastic Fest coverage kicks into high gear this weekend, four new movies will look to knock off The Lion King 3D from the top of the box office. Let’s take a look a closer look…

What’s the Scoop: Brad Pitt plays Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane in a movie based on the best-selling novel from Michael Lewis. Jonah Hill joins Pitt to crunch numbers and help win games.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s one of the most well-reviewed movies of the year (clocking a stellar 93% freshness rating over on RottenTomatoes) and Pitt and Hill give solid performances from a script co-written by Aaron Sorkin.
What’s the Scoop: Taylor Lautner isn’t the guy he thinks he is. Sound familiar? This time though, Lautner is on the run with Lily Collins as Alfred Molina and a bunch of bad guys chase him down. No werewolf transforming in this flick… we think.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Though it’s getting battered by critics, Twi-hards and more importantly, those of the Team Jacob persuasion will be checking this movie out… and we all know how fanatical Twi-hards are.
What’s the Scoop: Jason Statham and Robert De Niro team up to as special ops agents to take down the leader of a secret military society (Clive Owen).
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s got Statham, De Niro and Owen in the same movie, making bones go crunch, guns go bang and large objects go boom. What more could you possibly want from an action flick?
What’s the Scoop: Based on a true story about a group of strangers who come together to save a young dolphin whose tail gets caught and damaged in a crab trap. Starring Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman, Dolphin Tale looks to inspire and entertain people of all ages.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Family movies almost always fare well and with Tale getting mostly positive reviews, word of mouth could spread and catapult this movie over The Lion King.
My Pick: While Erik Davis, our regular Box Office writer, is currently immersed in all things Fantastic Fest, he’s going with Moneyball. As for myself, despite the Twilight crowd checking out Abduction and great reviews for Dolphin Tale and Moneyball, I don’t see either one of them topping The Lion King 3D. Although Moneyball won’t be that far off.
Pick of the Week: Moneyball is sure to generate some sort of Oscar buzz, so best to check this movie off your list before the heavywieghts like Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar and Spielberg's War Horse arrive in a few months. Not to mention all those random smaller movies that come out no where to earn a bunch of nominations *ahem* King's Speech, Hurt Locker, etc.
Now it’s your turn to weigh in on this week’s new movies. Who do you think will be the box office champ this weekend?
