You Pick the Box Office Winner (3/9-3/11)

Welcome back to our weekly box office prediction post. We trust you’ve had a swell week, and you’re itching to scoop up some tickets to the weekend’s new releases right here at Fandango. Before you do that, though, why not read through this post, find out what’s playing and make a prediction of your own. Trust us, it’s fun. And rewarding. And slightly spiritual … for some folks … we think. Let’s take a closer look at this week’s new release lineup …

John Carter

What’s the Scoop: Based on the classic book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the sci-fi epic stars Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War veteran who’s transported to Mars and injected right smack in the middle of a much bigger war between alien races.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s Disney’s first big blockbuster of the year, and if you’ve seen the commercials then you already know this one comes packed with enough spectacle to have you glued to your seat for two hours. Plus, this is the book that inspired films like Star Wars and Avatar, so that little comparison should help bring a lot more folks to the local theater.

Silent House

What’s the Scoop: Rising star (and third Olsen sister) Elizabeth Olsen leads this spooky flick about a family cleaning out an old house that’s hiding some ghostly secrets.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: The cool thing about this flick is it’s in real time, and that might help draw in a crowd. If not, Olsen is a real treat to watch, and she delivers a solid performance in a film that has more than a few scary cards up its sleeve.

A Thousand Words

What’s the Scoop: Eddie Murphy returns to screens as a guy who finds himself under a curse that limits him to 1,000 words until he dies.

Why It Might Win the Weekend: Well, Eddie Murphy comedies are hit and miss at the box office, and since this one isn’t tailored to the young kids, it’s a bit of a wild card. If you like Murphy’s humor, though, we’re sure you’ll find something to enjoy here.

My Prediction: It’s hard to bet against Disney’s John Carter, though it’s also hard to ignore The Lorax’s massive debut last weekend. This is a tough one, but I’m going with The Lorax for the win.

My Pick of the Week: Support original sci-fi and go see John Carter. If you feel like the story looks confusing, scope out this great beginner’s guide over at our sister site It’ll help better prepare you for a more enjoyable moviegoing experience.

Now it’s your turn! Sound off below and let us know which film you think will win the weekend box office.
