You Pick the Box Office Winner (12/16-12/18)

As the cold month of December begins to heat up at the box office, this weekend finds two sequels going head-to-head in an effort to find out who's really more popular: A British detective or a group of singing chipmunks. I don't know if we really want the answer to that question, but we'll certainly get it come Monday morning. Let's take a closer look ...

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

What's The Scoop: Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return for this sequel to the 2009 hit that brought the iconic British detective to the big screen courtesy of the always-stylistic Guy Ritchie. This time around the duo square off against the elusive Professor Moriarty, and try to put a stop to his evildoing once and for all.

Why It Might Win The Weekend: The first Sherlock Holmes enjoyed a monster opening weekend of $62 million while on its way to $524 million worldwide, paving the way for this sequel. If part two does similar business, then ... well, it's elementary my dear Watson.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked

What's The Scoop: In the third installment of the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise, the Chipmunks and Chipettes accidentally go overboard while traveling on a cruise ship, stranding them in tropical paradise.

Why It Might Win The Weekend: If we're holding up the opening numbers of the previous Alvin and the Chipmunks against the previous Sherlock Holmes, then Holmes wins it by a good amount. But the kiddie movies have been dominating these past few months, so it's really anyone's guess as to which one of these sequels will win the weekend.

My Prediction: I have to make a prediction anyway, and based solely on previous box office numbers, I'm going to go with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows for the win.

My Pick of the Week: Though it doesn't officially open until next week, Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol opened on IMAX screens today, five days early. Having seen it in IMAX already, I cannot recommend the film enough. Watching some of those action sequences on the giant IMAX screen was one of the highlights of my year, and I'm sure you'll agree. So if you can make it out to an IMAX screen near you, then your weekend movie-watching plans are set.

Now it's your turn -- sound off below and let us know which film you think will win the weekend.
