'X-Men' Sequel: What Did Michael Fassbender Tell Us About The Upcoming Script?

Can you name Michael Fassbender’s signature role? Tarantino-heads might point to Lt. Archie Hicox from Inglourious Basterds. Oscar trackers could lean toward his Rochester from Jane Eyre, or the sex-addict in Steve McQueen’s Shame

When all is said and done, though, Fassbender might be remembered for delivering the quintessential portrait of the power-mad mutant Magneto in the rebooted X-Men franchise. So when we spoke with the actor on behalf of Sir Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, we had to ask him if he’d seen a script for the highly anticipated sequel, which just received a 2014 release date.

"I’ve definitely talked about the sequel with Simon Kinberg, our writer," Fassbender tells us. "We’ve had a couple of meetings to chat about it. And I’m very excited, because we have a lot of really cool ideas there to work out. But I haven’t seen a script, as such. They’re kind of working on it as we speak."

Kinsberg’s involvement is interesting. He has been tied to the X-Men franchise for some time, writing Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 and co-producing X-Men: First Class for director Matthew Vaughn in 2011. IMDB says he’s co-writing this time out with First Class scripter Jane Goldman, and Vaughn will be back in the director’s chair. We expect the sequel to further develop the dynamic between Fassbender’s now-evil Magneto and the conflicted Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), who once was his close ally.

Fox has circled July 18, 2014 as a release date for the as-yet-untitled X-Men sequel. And it’s an understatement to claim that we can’t wait to see what these meetings Fassbender alludes to develop into once they reach the scripted page.

To get the buzz started, AICN mentions today that 20th Century Fox has registered the title "Days of Future Past" with the MPAA Title Registration Bureau, which may be linked to a two-issue story arc from the X-Men comics that dealt with alternative timelines. Are we looking at X-Men: Days of Future Past as the official title of the sequel? Since this story dealt with past and futue X-Men, could we see an Avengers-esque team-up of characters from both the First Class and original X-Men franchises? If so, this is kind of a big deal.

Guess we'll know soon enough ...
