Will Kristen Stewart Become 'An American Girl'?

Prior to playing Bella in Twilight, Kristen Stewart was a relatively unknown indie actress who popped up in fairly obscure festival films playing some variation of an abused and tormented teenager. Now, though, whether she wanted the attention or not, Stewart has become a sort of teen idol – joining the ranks of those who've come before her, like Kirk Cameron, Debbie Gibson, Davy Jones and Britney Spears.

One thing you should know about Stewart is that, like other actors and actresses, she is allowed to star in films that don't involve vampires played by Robert Pattinson. Not only will she be playing rocker Joan Jett in an upcoming musical biopic called The Runaways, but she may also be starring in the James Woods-directed film An American Girl.

No, Stewart will not be playing a jaded live-action version of the popular doll series, but instead would star in what sounds like the ultimate after-school special about a swimming and diving champion who turns all self-destructive and winds up living a life full of drugs and booze before getting her act together enough to join the Marines where she learns Arabic and travels abroad to work with Muslim women. Phew. That's an earful.

Woods told Coming Soon that the role is "a slam-dunk Oscar" for Stewart, and that the actress has been "urgently wanting to get the movie made." Personally it sounds like just another angsty teen role for Stewart (which we've seen from her time and time again), though maybe it could be the one to catapult her into awards season (and not just MTV Movie Awards season).

What do you think? Is Kristen Stewart a good actress, or just good at playing sad, jaded and confused teenagers?
