One of the biggest (and most successful) movie franchises is set to be auctioned off this month, and if you've got deep pockets (like millions of dollars deep) then you can own the Terminator and everything that goes along with him (batteries not included…we don't think).
A rarity in Hollywood, Terminator is one of the only giant franchises left that isn't owned by a particular studio. Halcyon, the production company that currently owns the rights, is having major bankruptcy issues, which is what's causing the franchise to be auctioned off in the first place. Strangely enough, this is the second time in as many months that a massive franchise has been auctioned off. Last month the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise were also auctioned off for about $60 million, though sources say the Terminator rights will fetch a lot more.
Among the studios interested in Terminator are Sony and Summit Entertainment, the former of which is listed as the current frontrunner. If a studio does pick up the Terminator rights, chances are they'll reboot the entire franchise before continuing along the route that McG began paving with Terminator Salvation.
Which would you rather see – a complete Terminator reboot, or a sequel to McG's Terminator Salvation?
