Movie studios release some of the most anticipated blockbusters during the summertime, which is one of the many reasons why most of us look forward to this season!
This summer is no exception, with films like Man of Steel, Despicable Me 2, Planes, Monsters University, The Lone Ranger and others rolling into theaters. Our love of movies must be contagious, because our children seem to have a love for the movies, too. Based on their interests, I’m going to guess 10-15 years from now, they’ll still enjoy watching Monsters University and Despicable Me 2, just as much as they did this summer.
Looking back to my childhood, I certainly have favorites that I still love seeing now that I’m a grown-up. Here are my Top 10 favorite movies from my childhood:
1. Star Wars
Seeing Star Wars in the movie theater is one of my all-time favorite memories. It may have been the beginning of my endless love affair with movies and movie memorabilia. Yes, I still have my Darth Vader carrying case and a few action figures.
2. The Goonies
Pirates, treasure, adventures with best friends and the beginning of my crush on Sean Astin.
3. Mary Poppins
She’s practically perfect in every way, and it’s a classic that’s just as fun to watch the hundredth time as it was the first.
4. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
I can’t wait to share this classic with my kids, but I’m waiting for them to get a little older, so they won’t be scared by the idea of aliens hiding with their stuffed animals.
5. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
It could be the candy, or the adorable Oompa Loompas, that has made this tale a classic. But for me, I think it’s the way it brings a child’s imagination to life that makes this one I never grow tired of watching!
6. The Neverending Story
One of the best fantasy movies of all time, and a great way to encourage kids to read books!
7. The Sound of Music
One of the best musicals ever made!
8. Lady and the Tramp
Disney has made so many movies that it’s very difficult to choose a favorite. Almost every animated film they’ve made has become a classic. But Lady and the Tramp is in my top 10. Yes, it could be the hopeless romantic in me!
9. The Fox and the Hound
I love this movie so much that my parents had a custom book made for me using my best friend’s name!
10. Back to the Future
You know you’ve watched this movie at least 20 times, it’s that cool!
So, which summer movies will your children be watching as adults?
