20th Century Fox has so many mutant projects in the hopper. James Mangold’s The Wolverine, due in theaters on July 26, leads into Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past … which we now believe is going to transition into an X-Force movie that will be written (and possibly directed) by Kick-Ass 2 helmer Jeff Wadlow.
Which begs the question: what is X-Force?
Those who read Marvel Comics in the early 1990s might recognize the team as a spin-off from The New Mutants. The defining character from the X-Force was Cable, a time-traveling warrior with a militant background (and aggressive battle tactics) who leads a group that includes Boom Boom, Colossus, Domino, Forge and more.
But the roster of X-Force has changed multiple times over the years, including – at different stages – Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm and several other original X-Men. The team also had members like Sunspot and Warpath… two characters who are rumored to be part of Singer’s Days of Future Past. The plot thickens.
It makes sense that Singer’s X-Men movie will act as a bridge to additional mutant projects, the way that The Avengers has led into Marvel’s Phase Two and beyond. There are SO many mutant-based titles that Fox can explore. We expect more news about the future of the X-franchises to come out of San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, so stay tuned. But for now, X-Force is getting a movie. What do you think?
