Weekend Chatter: Does an Oscar Nomination Influence Your Decision to See a Movie?

Have you ever heard of the Oscar “bump” before?

Movies that receive multiple Oscar nominations often benefit at the box office, where casual viewers decide to check out a film that has been recognized by the Academy. Case in point, David O. Russell’s fantastic ensemble comedy Silver Linings Playbook saw a 127% increase in daily ticket sales on Fandango after Thursday’s Oscar nominations. The film garnered 8 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and nods in all four acting categories.

Does this tactic work on you? Are you more willing to go see a movie that has been out for several weeks just because it scored multiple nominations?

Most of the films in this year’s Best Picture race already have performed well at the box office. Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln leads the nine-film pack with $146 million in domestic tickets sold, while Django Unchained, Argo and Les Miserables all have crossed the $100M mark and continue to climb.

But movies like Amour ($381,276), Zero Dark Thirty ($5.4M) and Beasts of the Southern Wild ($11.2M) can only benefit from Oscar nominations … if you think that kind of thing helps. Tell us below: Does an Oscar nomination influence your decision to go see a certain movie?

Don’t forget, in a few hours, director David O. Russell and the cast of Silver Linings Playbook are participating in a live Q&A tonight hosted by Fandango's chief correspondent Dave Karger.
