For some of us, the summer movie season just isn’t complete without a new Will Smith blockbuster. And yet, the self-proclaimed “King” of the July 4 holiday weekend hasn’t had a massive summer blockbuster since Hancock, which hit theaters in 2008 and went on to gross a staggering $624 million at the worldwide box office.
That’s why we’re eagerly anticipating Men in Black III, which simultaneously brings Smith back to the summer movie season (where he belongs) and resurrects the alien-investigating MiB franchise, which has been resting on a shelf since 2002. This morning, we received another full trailer for the upcoming sci-fi/comedy, which tries to lay out the intricate time-travel plot cooked up by director Barry Sonnenfeld and his team of screenwriters. Check it out below.
The clip does an excellent job of quickly reintroducing Agent J (Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) and their bizarre, extraterrestrial jobs before sending Big Willie Style on a mission back to 1969 to help the younger version of his partner and friend (played by Josh Brolin). The voice-over tidily explains that Smith has 24 hours to complete the mission or he’ll be stuck in the ‘60s forever, where he’ll stay busy slapping Andy Warhol (according to the clip).
The effects in this new Men in Black sequel look like the best of the series, with disgusting alien creatures, massive space ships, cool motorcycle-inspired racers and more hippie jokes than you can shake a tie-dyed tapestry at. But truth be told, I’d pay top dollar just to see Brolin channeling Jones. I know we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but if there’s a fourth Men in Black, I hope the focus shifts to young K, just so we get to spend more time with Brolin and his dry-as-dust Jones impersonation. It gets funnier the more I watch it.
For now, though, we have Smith, Jones, Brolin, Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Jemaine Clement, Bill Hader and Nicole Scherzinger geared up for the MiB sequel, which reaches theaters in 2D, 3D and IMAX on May 25. Does the clip get you excited? Let us know below.
