'Wanted 2' Moving Forward, Apparently Has a Great Plot Twist
Wanted 2 is one of those sequels that studios started teasing the minute the first movie screened. In this case, it was 2008 when Timur Bekmambetov introduced a league of assassins following the whims of a Loom of Fate. Powered by Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, the first movie grossed a whopping $341.4 million … but progress on a sequel stalled until right about now.
While promoting his next film, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Bekmambetov told The Playlist that he just recently cracked the code on the screenplay, and pitched an idea that everyone behind the scenes adored.
“And now I think we're on track,” the director said about the sequel. “Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking. … It's a continuation of the story, with [McAvoy’s character] Wesley Gibson. Other people are dead, you know, we can't bring them back. The story is the same character, same mythology, but it's got a great twist."
And with that, Wanted 2 is back in business. There’s plenty of source material for Wanted to explore. The original film was pulled from Mark Millar’s graphic novels, and there are thousands of subplots to use as the plot line.
It might be tough to sell the sequel without Jolie as an above-the-title draw. Plus, it will be years since the first one won audiences over … because Wanted 2 won’t be in theaters before 2014, even if it started filming tomorrow. Also, Bekmambetov is developing a Moby Dick film, based on Herman Melville’s classic novel.
"It will be a bigger than life story, and it's got a great twist for the famous story,” he said. “The idea is, it's exactly what's in the book, from a different character point of view."
So Wanted 2 might be on the backburner, but at least it sounds like it’s happening. Good idea? Bad idea? Let us know your thoughts.
