Vin Diesel As Groot? Leaked Comic-Con Footage? The Latest News on Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Marvel Studios made several splashes at Walt Disney Studio’s fan event, the D23 Expo, in Anaheim over the weekend. Footage from Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier was shown to fans. But the project that continues to resonate as we transition into the week? Oddly enough, it’s James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Maybe it’s because, on the surface, we know very little about Guardians. It isn’t based on a household name like Captain America, the Hulk or Spider-Man. It’s being adapted from a popular but still sort of unknown books about offbeat antiheroes. And it has handsome actors, but no bankable “movie stars” like Robert Downey Jr.
But the footage Marvel keeps sharing, at Comic-Con and D23, plays EXTREMELY well with crowds because of its flippant, sarcastic vibe. And Gunn might have a major hit on his hands… or a complete train wreck. It honestly could go either way. As the dust settles on the D23 panel for Guardians, a slew of new news items hit the Web over the weekend and this morning. Let’s break down the three biggest.
1. Vin Diesel might join the Guardians ensemble… as the voice of Groot?
Diesel has been lobbing rumors that he’s taking meetings with Marvel and circling a major project. While many speculated that the Fast & Furious megastar would play Thanos in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Diesel hinted on Facebook that he’ll lend his voice to Groot, a member of the team.
Who is Groot? He’s a treelike creature who primarily only says, "I am Groot!" But he fights alongside the Guardians in their various battles.
Is it a big enough part for Diesel? Not really. But between Fast and Riddick, the man has his share of franchises, and this could just be a fun one-off for him, a decent payday for very little work.
2. The movie’s shooting in London… and there are set photos everywhere.
We’re not going to link to them. Or post them. At Fandango, we prefer to wait until a finished film reaches theaters, because – especially with an effects-heavy feature like Guardians – too much can change between the film set and the actual movie.
BUT… if you want to see multiple images of the Guardians cast filming alongside some extraterrestrials on the Millennium Bridge in London, click here. And also here
They do look impressive. And strange. And kind of wonderful. Man, I want to see more footage from this movie, now!
3. Rocket Raccoon might be an A-lister… or Hollywood’s most recent case of nepotism.
I know we’re spending a lot of time on the voices of CGI characters, but with the bulk of Gunn’s human cast in place (from Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana to Lee Pace), fans of Guardians want to know who’ll voice both Groot and the gun-toting Rocket Raccoon.
Reports coming in regarding Rocket’s casting vary wildly. ComicBookMovie runs a rumor saying that Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn, is lending his voice to the menacing Raccoon. HitFix, on the other hand, goes in the complete opposite direction. It reports that Marvel wants “giant movie stars” to contend for Rocket Raccoon, and “my guess is it's going to be a movie star on par with a Bruce Willis or a Johnny Depp or a Tom Cruise.”
Wow. That would shake things up on Guardians, no?
Details are snapping into place for Guardians, and leaked footage from the Comic-Con panel is making the rounds. (Again, we aren’t posting it, but it’s available, if you spend five minutes looking.) Marvel has a special, unique project with Guardians. It could turn the superhero franchise industry on its ear, and kick Marvel into the stratosphere for its pending Phase Three. We’ll continue to track the movie’s progress, but for now, what do you think about Guardians of the Galaxy? And what else are you dying to know?
