Some franchises think they move fast, but none move quite as fast as the aptly-titled Fast and Furious series.
Case in point: The sixth installment of the long-running cars-chase series hasn’t even reached theaters yet, and the stars already are announcing a release date for part seven.
Taking the stage at Las Vegas CinemaCon, Fast star Vin Diesel revealed (via Collider) that the as-yet-untitled Fast Seven will be in theaters on July 11, 2014. He had no other details, though we’ve heard over the past few days that Paul Walker is expected to return for the sequel and Insidious director James Wan is the frontrunner to replace Justin Lin in the director’s chair.
There remains a few questions. Will the tight turnaround mean that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will have to bail because of previous commitments to Brett Ratner’s Hercules, which is expected in theaters on July 25, 2014? Will there be other fresh faces be added to the mix?
As of right now, Fast Seven has that weekend all to itself. Disney will open Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent on July 2, while Fox has X-Men: Days of Future Past pegged for July 18. But the fact that Universal is ready to roar into a seventh Fast & Furious even before part six reaches theaters HAS to mean that they are confident in the coming sequel, which is great news for fans.
- Also part of Universal’s panel at CinemaCon, the studio announced 2015 release dates for two sequels. Pitch Perfect 2 and Snow White and the Huntsman 2 will go into production soon, resulting in second chapters reaching theaters in two years. We’ll bring you more on these movies as they develop.
