Universal Officially Puts the Brakes on 'Fast & Furious 7'

In the wake of Paul Walker’s untimely death, Universal officially has announced that it will halt production on the seventh film in the long-running, high-octane Fast & Furious series until it can figure out how best to proceed in a sensitive manner.

“Right now, all of us at Universal are dedicated to providing support to Paul’s immediate family and our extended Fast & Furious family of cast, crew and filmmakers,” a studio rep announced in a statement. “At this time we feel it is our responsibility to shut down production on Fast & Furious 7 for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise.”

It’s the right decision. Directed by James Wan, the seventh Fast & Furious already was racing the clock to stay on schedule for its July 11, 2014 release date. Halting production – even temporarily – no doubt means that the date will be changed… if not scrapped, completely.

Producer Neal Moritz recently told EW.com, “We wouldn’t make any rational decisions right now. We want to see what the family wants to do. We want to do what best honors Paul.”

And in a second statement, Universal confirmed, “We are committed to keeping Fast & Furious fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it. Until then, we know they join us in mourning the passing of our dear friend Paul Walker.”

More on the development on this franchise, and its difficult position, as it happens…
