'Tron: Legacy' Launches Worldwide Viral Marketing Hunt

Much like the viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, Disney is hoping to build more awareness for its Tron sequel, Tron: Legacy, by launching a massive worldwide scavenger hunt via their viral site, Flynn Lives. Earlier last week I was one of the many who received a piece of diamond-shaped object in the mail. On it was a web address that lead folks to a countdown clock. Well, that countdown clock ended today, and with it came the announcement of a really big worldwide scavenger hunt that asked fans from several cities to rush to a location with a secret password.\

Tron: Legacy

From there, the lucky people who manage to be the first to arrive at their city's secret location appear to be receiving a wallet full of all kinds of movie swag, including a code that when entered on the site unlocks a small window with an image from the original Tron. Just what that space will reveal later on is still a mystery (new image? New trailer? Nothing?), so we'll have to keep an eye out to see what happens next. In the meantime, head over to Flynn Lives to see which cities are still in the running, and maybe you can be the lucky Tron nut to take home that goodie bag while subsequently receiving that special code.
It's a smart move on Disney's part, in my opinion, since they're going to need to build the hype for this one considering the first Tron came out in 1982 and was more of a cult hit than anything else. If they want this to become a huge blockbuster come December, they'll need to attract an audience who probably isn't familiar with the original at all.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to Tron: Legacy? Did you see the original?
