Trailer Watch: Indie Films Opening This Weekend (6/24-6/26)

This weekend marks the return of Pixar to movie theaters as Lightning McQueen, Mater and the rest of the Cars 2 crew race into theaters to solve an international conspiracy. Cameron Diaz also returns to theaters as a foul-mouthed junior high school teacher who gets dumped by her sugar daddy and starts to woo Justin Timberlake, much to Jason Segel and Lucy Punch’s dismay in Bad Teacher. But perhaps you’re in the mood for something less mainstream (and with better critical reviews).

Conan O’Brien’s documentary Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop gets a limited release as does the Chinese historical drama starring Chow Yun-Fat and Andy Lau, Jian Dang Wei Ye – The Beginning of the Great Revival. Let’s take a look at what else is hitting theaters this weekend…
From director Chris Weitz (About a Boy, American Pie) comes a touching, poignant multi-generational story about a father’s love and the lengths a parent will go to give his child the opportunities he never had. Demian Bichir stars as Carlos, a gardener in East L.A. who struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents.

Baya, a young liberal extrovert who lives by the classic motto of “Make love, not war,” sleeps with her conservative political opponents to convert them to her cause. All is going well until she meets Arthur Martin, a 40-something who is her complete opposite. When the two fall in love, sparks begin to fly.

Narrated by Miranda Richardson, Turtle tells the story of a loggerhead turtle who follows the path of her ancestors on one of the most extraordinary journeys in the natural world. She rides the Gulf Stream all the way to the frozen north and ultimately swims around the entire North Atlantic to Africa and back to the Florida beach where she was born. With the odds stacked against her (only one in 10,000 turtles survive the journey), can the loggerhead complete her journey?
