Once upon a time, John Hillcoat’s Prohibition-era crime thriller went by the name The Wettest County in the World. Now it’s called Lawless, which is a bit more generic. Truth be told, with this cast in place, it doesn’t matter what you name it, we’re buying a ticket and checking it out.
Hillcoat’s drama, adapted from Matt Bondurant’s novel, follows a loyal family of moonshine runners (played by Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke) as they avoid the law (Guy Pearce) and potentially get in deep with a dirty criminal who plays by his own rules (Gary Oldman).
Seeing as how Hillcoat directed two outstanding features in The Proposition and The Road, pairing him with such a powerful set of male leads has me salivating for macho summer entertainment. But when you add Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska to the mix, boast a screenplay by Nick Cave, and highlight contributions from cinematographer Benoît Delhomme … well, Lawless quickly becomes one of my most-anticipated dramas of the upcoming summer season.
The Weinstein Company will bring Lawless to Cannes in May, then hold it out of theaters until Aug. 31. Expect the studio to try and generate awards buzz for the film, depending on how well it is received by crowds and critics in France.
