With all these '80s remakes popping up in theaters, it was only a matter of time before we came across more of our beloved favorites. Considering Top Gun was such a big success for Tom Cruise at the time, it's surprising that a sequel never came about. There had been talk over the years (most recently in 2008) of Cruise returning for a sequel as a 'Top Gun' instructor himself, but that never happened. Now, though, it looks like Paramount wants to make a sequel happen – so much so that they've made offers to both Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott, and are trying to get Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects) to update the sequel's script.
'Top Gun 2' in the Works – Tom Cruise May Return
Furthermore, it looks like Tom Cruise will reprise the role of Maverick for the sequel, though it will be a smaller part. According to Vulture, McQuarrie has convinced Cruise to return, but only if it isn't in an obvious role like that of a Top Gun flight instructor. Perhaps we'll find Maverick running karaoke at the bar where he brought the house down in the original film singing "You've Lost that Loving Feeling."
Do you think there's still room at the multiplex for a romance-fueled fighter jet action sequel starring Tom Cruise? Or is this a story best left in the 1980s? Sound off below with your thoughts…
