Tom Hanks Experiences Terror on the Seas in 'Captain Phillips' Trailer

Those watching Breaking Bad last night – and there were roughly 10.7 million of you tuned into the AMC finale – you saw an amazing trailer for Paul Greengrass’ upcoming Captain Phillips, a ripped-from-the-headlines account of one heroic sailor (Tom Hanks) and his fight to survive when his freightliner is attacked by Somali pirates. Universal quickly put the trailer online, and we’re happy to share it with you below.

Please be warned. The two-minute trailer contains a LOT of material from the film, and might want to be avoided if you want to go into Captain Phillips with a clean slate.

Hanks and Greengrass have been generating heaping amounts of Oscar praise all of a sudden, given the fact that it recently opened the New York Film Festival and went over big with critics and crowds. Hanks, in particular, has received some of the best marks of his career, while some pundits claim its Greengrass’ best work since the 9/11 drama United 93… and possibly even better than that.

Greengrass seems to have mastered the art of striking to the heart (and fear) of current events, and Hanks supposedly earns the Academy’s attentions in the final act of Captain Phillips, which promises to be riveting.

The Captain Phillips marketing machine is ramping up. And it needs to, because things are about to get very busy at the multiplexes, with Gravity, Rush, Prisoners and The Fifth Estate all competing for your eyeballs.

Here’s the latest Captain Phillips poster. Do you think you’ll go along for Greengrass’ harrowing ride?
