Tom Cruise Learns the Ugly Truth in Action-Packed 'Oblivion' Trailer

In Oblivion, Tom Cruise plays a member of the “mop-up crew,” a team tasked with repairing security drones on our planet … which has been deserted following a devastating war. Cruise is alone on this mission. Or so he thinks.

An earlier trailer did a lot to establish the sci-fi, post-apocalypse tone and approach of Cruise’s Oblivion, which will be directed by Tron: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski. Now a new trailer shared via MSN ramps up the action, setting aside people’s fears that Oblivion would be a live-action WALL-E
Here’s the new Oblivion trailer. Turn up your computer’s speakers:

“They lied to you. It’s time to know the truth.”
There’s a lot of plot in that trailer. I’m more intrigued by the quotes our sister site,, pulled from Kosinski about his approach to the sci-fi genre in general. I think it will help you understand what to expect from Oblivion:
“I always knew exactly what I wanted the film to look like. Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I feel like after Alien, science fiction kind of went into the dark for a long time. It became about deep space and dark ship holes and it just went into darkness. I liked the idea of bringing science fiction out into the daylight again.
“So it is a daytime science fiction film where the world is kind of divided into two zones: the world above the clouds and the world below the clouds,” he continued. “The world above the clouds is where Jack lives with Victoria, his partner, in this operation, in the skytower which is 3,500 feet above the ground, away from the dangers that live below, which is a very different world from the ground where Jack actually has to do his job every day. And that juxtaposition to me in concept lends itself into a visual juxtaposition as well, where you're gonna see technology set against a landscape that I feel is something we haven't really seen before.”
Oblivion opens in theaters on April 26.
