Tim Burton's Next 3D Film is...

The Addams FamillyWith Alice in Wonderland raking in the cash at the box office, it’s no surprise that Tim Burton is looking to remain in the world of 3D for his next project. While some have suggested that the writer-director-artist present his own interpretation of The Wizard of Oz, Deadline New York reports that he’ll instead resurrect another classic family, signing on to create a stop-motion 3D film based on the Addams Family. Ya know, those folks who are creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky.

So bad news for those who wanted Burton to go back and churn out another original story, but good news for those who’d rather see a stop-motion Burton film over anything else. Before it was a television show, and then later a couple of movies, the Addams Family were a series of cartoons by Charles Addams. Burton says he will draw inspiration from these early drawings, which are similar in look, feel and tone to Burton’s own library of drawings.

If anyone should take on the Addams Family, it’s Burton – and though it’s not an original piece, there’s certainly a lot of room for Burton to play around with, especially with the stop-motion angle. No word yet on cast, though I’d expect we might see Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter play Gomez and Morticia Addams, respectively. I could also see Depp lending his voice to the freaky Uncle Fester, wonderfully played by Christopher Lloyd in the two Addams Family movies directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

What do you think about Tim Burton taking on the Addams Family? Is it the perfect property for someone as kooky and spooky as Burton, or should he have taken on something new, fresh and original?
