This Week at the Alamo Drafthouse: Muppets, 'Pride and Prejudice,' 'Manitou' and The Queen Sing-Along

Alamo DrafthouseAs you may have heard, Fandango’s now a ticketing partner for the most fantabulous theater chain in all the lands, the one-and-only Alamo Drafthouse headquartered in Austin, Texas (voted #1 by EW as the best theater in the US, and picked by our own editor on his 100 Days of Summer Movies adventure as the best all-around theatrical experience)…why all the love? Simply put, because no one’s programming movies and an 'experience' around movies quite like the fine folks at the Alamo. If you love cinema and fun, then this is your paradise. Here, in our new weekly blog post called 'This Week at the Alamo,' we'll present all of their cool upcoming, signature Alamo programming, including the Sing-Alongs, Quote-Alongs, Big Screen Classics, Terror Tuesdays, Weird Wednesdays, Films & Feasts, and Live Score events.

If you're not in Austin, don't fret. There are already plans in the works for Drafthouse expansion. For now, though, check out the sampling below of the type of events coming up for your cinematic pleasure, and for those who can make it, get your tix quick!

The Alamo is partnering with The Jim Henson Legacy and Brooklyn Academy of Music to present a series of special Muppet-related programming. You’ll see some of the greatest moments from the 50+ year history of the Muppets, rarely seen gems from the Sesame Street vaults, and even some experimental short films from Henson stepping out of the puppetry game.

An impossibly ambitious feature that pits the late Tony Curtis in a kaleidoscopic trans-dimensional war against an evil Native American dwarf that emerges from a lady's spine. This all takes place in a hospital that's also a gateway to an alternate universe. Don't blink or you'll miss the doctor exploding! For more details on the awesomeness that is The Manitou, here's an MDC So Bad, They're Brilliant column on its infinite pleasures.

Girlie Night: Pride and Prejudice (4/12, 4/19)

Jane Austen's perennially popular story of the game of love among the British upper classes returns to the screen in this polished film adaptation.

Strange Brew Beer Party (Special Rolling Roadshow Event) (4/14)

Alamo is inviting all local brewers to attend a special outdoor screening of Strange Brew followed by a Q&A with Dogfish Head CEO Sam Calagione and other local Austin brewers. And it keeps getting better…there will be an extensive line-up of local beer-makers for you to taste.

This is Spinal Tap w/Harry Shearer Live (4/14)

Harry Shearer will introduce the film This is Spinal Tap in which he stars as bass player Derek Smalls. Shearer is also known for lending his voice to over twenty characters in The Simpsons, including Mr. Burns, Smithers, and Flanders. He will also be screening his new documentary The Big Uneasy earlier in the evening.

Freddie Mercury is considered the greatest rock singer of all time. He came, he saw, he conquered, and he left the world a completely changed and better place. A master of constant reinvention, Mercury made opera cool, mustaches a necessity, and full-length microphone stands excessive. And that is why the Alamo is paying tribute to the man with the pipes of gold. It's time to bust out your best catsuit, slap on your complimentary mustache, and prepare to take your voice on a four-octave journey of non-stop rock.
