The Rock Set to Play Hercules for Brett Ratner

As we mentioned on Friday in our Best of the Week recap post, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was in talks to play the titular role in Brett Ratner's Hercules.

Variety reports that MGM has confirmed the news and that the film will be an adaptation of Steve Moore's 2008 graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars. The storyline in the comic takes place in barbarian Thrace, rather than Greece, and follows Hercules training the ruthless Thracian army under the command of the country's king.

Does this mean we're going to get more of that Immortals/Wrath of the Titans-esque action violence? We'll have to wait quite a while as the movie isn't slated to hit theaters until 2014. Meanwhile, production is set to begin in October in New Zealand.

Johnson has been making a bit of a comeback in the action movie genre, beginning with last year's supporting role in the mega-blockbuster Fast Five and continuing this year with G.I. Joe: Retaliation and the current action thriller Snitch that he's currently filming.

Ah yes, and then there's still WrestleMania XXVIII. What do you think? Do you like The Rock as Hercules? He certainly has the brawn and body for the role. Who else should be cast?
