Batten down the hatches, boys and girls, because the next nationwide "purge" is coming soon… very soon. The Purge 2, the sequel to the Ethan Hawke-starring horror thriller, has been set for release on June 20, 2014.
The original film, which came out on June 7, introduced a disturbing alternative America in which all crime is made legal, without fear of punishment, for a 12-hour period every year. Ethan Hawke locks himself and his family inside their home, which itself is inside a gated community, but then must decide what to do when a stranger comes knocking in need of protection.
The indie producers of the low-budget film -- reportedly made for just $3 million -- made plans for a sequel even before the first film was released, and worldwide box office earnings of nearly $90 million surely made it an easy decision for Universal to fast-track the sequel for release next summer. James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed The Purge, is returning, which is great news.
As a horror film, The Purge benefited from a lack of competition in the summertime this year. Right now, it's the only horror title on the schedule for June 2014, though Beware the Night, from Sinister director Scott Derrickson, will be hitting theaters two weeks later.
