'The Lego Movie' Sequel Gets a Release Date

You loved The Lego Movie, right? Of course you did. It was awesome. In fact, everything is awesome!

You know what else is awesome? Warner Bros. revealed that, thanks to the success of the first movie, a Lego sequel already is in the studio’s pipeline. Screenwriters Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan have been tapped to explore the next chapter in the “life” of Master Builder Emmet. It’s up to them as to whether Batman, Superman and the rest of his Super Friends will return for the sequel.

You know what isn’t awesome? We’re going to have to wait until 2017 to see the next Lego movie. May 26, 2017, to be exact. That’s the date Warner has circled for the Lego Movie follow-up, giving the creative team behind the anticipated sequel plenty of time to give us reasons WHY we’d want to come back for more.

That sounds like a long time. It is. But The Lego Movie couldn’t have expected the levels of success it achieved? It wasn’t exactly like Despicable Me 2, which knew that it was sitting on a gold mine, and could green-light a movie like Minions because the crowds obviously were going to turn out.

You can bet that Warner likely is thinking ahead to a third Lego movie (and beyond) at this point, though. What worked once should work several times. That’s studio logic!
